Don't know when I'll be back again

2006-12-27
I had a weird christmas. I was kind of determined not to celebrate it because really, it's my least favorite holiday, and I was particularly unprepared for it this year. But basically, I slept in for a while, and then went to Connecticut in the afternoon. Jill's dad is kind of a nut case; when I was talking to her about what train I should take, he offered to come get me. From New York. I told him he was ridiculous and that I would take a train. I went fully expecting to unload the truck, so that no one else would have to, and Jill would have a light truck when she goes to work at the casino (she does overhire there for crazy good pay, and is working today through the 31st, 14 hour days. Would that I were making that much money) but when I got there, Jill's mom and two brothers had moved everything into the garage. Whoa. I was a little stunned and I owe them big time. Part of the reason I went was because the groundplans that Matt gave me have no dimensions, and I needed to find my scale rule. I dug through everything and pulled out my drafting bag and christmas presents and the cookies that I made for everyone and gave to no one. Oops. Jill hid them in the truck and I couldn't find them, so I left three bags with Jill's family, and I have the other 5 bags wih me. Oof. And then Jill and I watched movies. For everyone that hasn't seen Grease 2, please don't. It's terrible. Awful. Shameful. There are two good points. 1) At the end of the first (atrocious) song a guy who is late to class runs and dives in through a window. 2) There are motorcycles. I like motorcycles. Other than that, I really wanted to scrub my brain and eyes. We also watched Flatliners and Footloose. I liked the premise of Flatliners, and the idea it posited, but I really had't expected it to be that creepy. And Footloose, well, it's one of my favorite movies. Not in the top 5, but maybe in the top 10. I'd have to actually make that list to know.
I didn't get back to the city until nearly 2pm. I was lugging my regular bag, a small duffel bag with odds and ends and christmas presents from my mom, my juggling clubs, and my portfolio. It was a little painfully awkward, but I made it. I actually took a nap. This is note-worthy because I never take naps. There was a small period of time a few years ago when I was able to, and did just about every day, but then that ended and I was back to no-napping. I tried to do a little work, but gave up pretty quickly and watched tv and looked for apartments. I think I found a really good one. But I feel like I can't go look at it yet because now that there are three of us, I can't sign the lease by myself. It just feels very complicated, and maybe it's not and I'm freaking out for no reason. I don't know. I just am trying not to get my hopes up. But at the same time, time is running out. I need to find a place to live and get settled. As comfortable as my aunts living room is (and whole apartment, since it's mine for the next few days) I can't stay here for long. I'm sure she would say otherwise, but I want to leave before anyone gets sick of me, and before I get too used to it (though I've already gotten a little spoiled be having cable).
Anyway. I did some work this morning. I still have to find out how much I'm going to get paid for this. I have no idea what I should even be asking. I also found out the Naya is still in the city! She didn't get any time off for holidays. So we are having lunch in about an hour. Which means that I should stop writing and get dressed and move the groudplans so the cats don't eat them or something. The cats are pretty awesome. Kukla hangs out and sleeps on me and wants to play while I'm working and Ollie has stopped running away and will even stand up and ask to be petted when I come into a room. I know I mention this a lot, but I miss living with cats. And while living with these three means that I can't get my own kittens for a while, I'm okay with that.
More about the road trip later.
